Caveman Diet (Paleo Diet)
What is this Caveman Diet?
The promises portrayed with the paleo diet, or as some have heard it mentioned, the caveman diet, is being able to eat like a caveman and shedding off weight.
There's even a book out there written by Loren Cordain, PhD, stating that if we eat like our prehistoric ancestors, we could be leaner beings.
Basically what it is, is a promise that eating a high protein, high fiber diet, you no longer have to count calories.
Well let's dive into the facts on this whole ordeal.
What you can Eat
In the Paleo Diet, you're eating a lot of fresh lean meats and fish, fruits, and vegetables, and healthier fats.
You can also eat eggs, nuts and seeds, and healthier oils to include coconut and avacado oils.
Things you can't Eat
Things you have to avoid while on the Paleo Diet are any processed foods.
And while our ancestors were hunter-gatherers, that means no more farm foods such as wheat and dairy.
You also can't have certain grains and legumes such as peanuts and beans in your diet.
Some other foods you have to get rid of are potatoes, salt, refined sugars, and refined vegetable oils such as canola oil.
But does it Work?
While eliminating all grains, dairy, processed foods, sugars, and more may already aid in weight loss, this is an extremely difficult diet to follow due to all the dietary limitations and restrictions.
There are several studies on certain aspects of the Paleo Diet. While they may not support all the claims made in the book, they have found that a diet rich in lean protein and plant-based foods can make you feel fuller, help control blood sugar levels, and help you lose weight.
Clearly the Paleo diet still needs some more research, but we don't see why it wouldn't be a good cycle type of diet.
